From IDE to Agent: Introducing the New Shape
Shape is evolving from an IDE built from scratch into a native app designed for AI agents. A new foundation for how you build software, and the next chapter of Shape.

Six months ago, I started Shape to fix a few things that frustrated me about my own workflow. I wasn't planning to build an IDE; I just wanted something that worked the way I wanted to work.
That project grew into a custom IDE of our own. But as the agent improved, it started to matter more than the editor around it. I found myself thinking less about building a better IDE and more about what it would look like if the agent itself was the product.
So we changed direction. Shape is now a native app built around an agent that can explore your codebase, edit files, run commands, plan its work and review changes. You can choose your model, connect tools like GitHub, Linear and Figma, and stay in control of every edit.
We didn't throw away the work we'd already done. The IDE and the agent grew from the same underlying framework, so we kept that foundation and changed what we built on top of it.
What started as a project to fix my own workflow has become something quite different. This release is the next step for Shape, and the direction we're taking from here.
